Happy 45th Anniversary, Star Trek!

It’s the 45th anniversary of Star Trek today! I fell in love with the show during Star Trek: The Next Generation’s run, and in rewatching it with my sister I’ve been realizing a lot of stuff I didn’t notice the first time ’round. For one, I’d never really thought about how many minorities, women and people of all ages are just there, both in the background and the foreground. There was more diversity on the Enterprise-D or even the original series than I see in most movies today. No wonder I could always see myself on the Enterprise!

Anyhow, it’d be easy to go on and talk about how happy I am to live in the future that Star Trek helped inspire, but instead, I’m going to link someone else’s tribute to trek, because hers is, well, cuter:

A cookie to mjg59 (who is a poster here also) for this response to rape denial on the linux.conf.au 2011 chat list. Here’s an excerpt:

You’re right, you’re not diminishing what rape is. However, you really do seem to be doing your best to. You’ve taken Jacinta’s entirely reasonable demonstration that a significant proportion of the audience may have personal experiences that would leave them disproportionately likely to be made uncomfortable by sexual imagery in a conference environment, and you’ve used it as an opportunity to throw numbers around in order to forward the argument that the number of women raped by strangers in isolated areas is lower than 1 in 6 despite *nobody having raised that subject at all*.

Liz and I think there should be a LOLCOOKIE generator so we can give cookies to people who deserve them, but we’re too lazy/tired/busy/spoonless to do it right now. But hey, GF readers are a bunch of nerds, right? There’s gotta be someone who’ll take this on.

Your mission:

1. Take this picture (click through for full size version)…

2. Write a script which will superimpose a message of the user’s choice, similar to the cookies shown in this Flickr set. Mimicking icing as closely as possible would be ideal, though straight text will do.

3. Add a web front-end, so people can easily build their own cookies. It should run on any halfway decent web host with minimal extra installs, please.

4. Bonus points: figure out a way to allow hotlinking within reason, but prevent DDoS. (Yeah, I know.)
